THROGMORTON CUP

LAST MINUTE WINNER!!
At last we got this long awaited cup-tie played.
But a small crowd in attendance. The rest stayed
at home watching some game on the tele! in
their slippers. The visitors came with maybe a label of the underdogs. But that was not the case.
I knew we would be in for a hard game regarding
the quality of players they now carry. How right
I was when they hit us with an early goal. the
ball pulled back from the bye-line and hit first time giving Zinny no chance to save. We battled
on and just before the break had a slice of luck.
Visiting keeper Steve Taylor no less, made a fumble in the box. Sammy Mathews shot was blocked, but the second ball ran kindly for Chris Wright to finish, and bring us level. After the tea and biscuits, both sides went looking for the winner. Chances were there, with both keepers on active duty. The 90min whistle saw no change. We entered extra time with the thought of a penalty shoot-out looming. However, manager Dave Leonard played all the options from the bench, one of which was Danny Worth drafted in from the second team. In the dying moments of the second period of extra time, he crossed a perfect ball. Chris Wright slipped his marker, and his clear cut header found the net for the jubilant winner. That was to be the killer blow for the game. But it must be said they gave us a hard and sporting game, and we wish them well in their onslaught in the league.
